Sarah is an 40-something artist struggling to come to terms with her son leaving for university. Her conflicted feelings dredge up some old memories, and spark an idea for a new installation that eventually leads to a much needed emotional rebirth.
Yonoko on In My Absence: “I think often women, mothers in this instance, are expected to be one thing and only one thing. With this piece I wanted to explore the complex humanity of one such mother, and the different motivations that drive each facet of her life. Doing so without judgement of her actions past and present was really important to me. It is a dangerous time for women right now, and in some part I hope this film can help empower women to live their own emotional truths without judgment or pressure to conform to a specific narrative.”
